The Tennessee Titans have the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after finishing last season with a record of 3-13. With the exception of the quarterback position and now the running back position with the acquisition of DeMarco Murray, the they could use an upgrade in nearly every position on offense and defense. Their offense started with Marcus Mariotta and basically ended there last season. DeMarco Murray, although he struggled in Philadelphia, should take some of the load off of Mariotta this season. The only problem is their offensive line is terrible, so that still might not be enough to make a difference. They do have some talent upfront but with an average age of 24.4 on the offensive line there just isn’t a lot of experience. Which could be what contributed to the 38 sacks of Mariotta, which put him 9th in the NFL last season in that category.
The running backs also struggled all season, whether it be because of the inexperienced offensive line, injuries and even inexperience by the running backs themselves. Which is why DeMarco Murray was a big acquisition in my mind.
As is the case with many young QB’s, tight end Delanie Walker was Mariotta’s favorite target by a wide margin. He finished the season with 94 receptions for 1,088 yards and 6 touchdowns. They also have a good, young receiver in Dorial Green-Beckham who should be a solid receiver if he can stay healthy, and speedster Kendall Wright provides experience to go along with Beckham at the wideout spot.
On defense the Titans have some talent with guys like Michael Griffin and Brian Orakpo, but could use some much needed depth and a big time playmaker in the secondary. Since they have the first pick, they are in the drivers seat as to who they want to go with.
The first guy that jumps off the board and fills a need is Laremy Tunsil, the offensive tackle out of Ole Miss. A lot of experts think he can come in and make a difference on any offensive line right away. This would fill a huge need for the Titans and possibly give Mariotta some much needed protection from the LT position for years to come. I think if they go this route it will be a solid pick that they will be happy with. If they go defense, Joey Bosa could be the choice or a guy like Jalen Ramsey out of Florida St. I think I like Ramsey more than Bosa because he is such a playmaker in the secondary.
As is the case with any team that has the number 1 pick, the opportunities are endless. With that being said, I think the one opportunity the Titans have to take advantage of if it comes up, is to trade the first pick and stock up on multiple picks. Sure Tunsil or Ramsey could make an impact this season, but I just think the Titans need so much across the board that they will be better off getting muliple guys who could make a difference this season. With Mariotta in his second year under center I think they will be better this year, but he needs a lot of help if they want to make a playoff run. If they are able to trade out of the first spot, they could probably target a couple guys like OT Taylor Decker and CB Eli Apple, both out of Ohio State. Both guys are first round talents and if the Titans can move back one of them would be a good pick, and at the same time the Titans would be acquiring more picks probably in the second or third rounds. If they wanted to go receiver to help Mariotta more a guy like LaQuan Treadwell could be a good option but I think the better choice in this situation would be offensive line or cornerback.
All that being said I think the Titans will select Laremy Tunsil with the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
